What is the key to ensuring generator set reliability? At least three fundamental elements must be addressed: Man (operators and technicians), Method (standardized operational and maintenance procedures), and Machine (equipment quality and supporting systems).
“While Method and Machine are critical, the Man factor remains a primary determinant of operational reliability. It relates directly to the competence and situational awareness of operators and technicians responsible for the equipment,” stated Temmy Hanafi, Operation Division Head of PT Sumberdaya Sewatama, during a knowledge-sharing session titled “Reliable by Behaviour” at the Sewatama Amphitheatre (Dec 2, 2025).
He emphasized that operators and technicians must demonstrate proactive behaviour in genset operations. Daily discipline is essential: conducting routine inspections, monitoring control panel parameters, detecting even the slightest anomalies, and completing the operational logbook accurately. Consistent execution of these daily habits enables early detection of potential failures before they escalate into critical downtime.

Proactive behaviour must also translate into correct field actions. Operators and technicians are required to check for fluid leaks, verify fluid levels, and identify abnormal sound or vibration patterns. Any findings, no matter how minor, must be recorded and escalated for immediate follow-up. Conversely, certain behaviours must be avoided, such as delaying inspections, ignoring unusual smells, failing to monitor the control panel, or assuming the unit is fine simply because it is still running. The key principle is clear: if its condition is not confirmed normal, it must be treated as abnormal and investigated further.
“Operators and technicians must adopt a preventive mindset, anticipating any potential failure modes in the engine. Abnormal sound, vibration, or odor must trigger immediate action and corrective measures,” Temmy added.
He further reiterated the importance of maintaining high equipment awareness at all times. With the right behavioural approach, up to 70% of potential operational issues can be mitigated. Technicians must respond swiftly to any anomaly, conducting detailed checks on aspects that are often overlooked yet critical.
“Strengthen your sense of awareness and avoid the mindset of ‘as long as it runs, it’s fine,’” he emphasized.
This sharing session is part of the Month of People activities, which run from November 5 to December 4, 2025. The event brings together all Sewatama personnel, including site leaders across regions and head office employees, reinforcing a unified commitment to operational excellence and behaviour-driven reliability.
