Brighter Mines, Safer Lives

Behind the roar of giant machines and the bustle of night operations in mining areas lies one crucial factor often overlooked: adequate lighting. Without sufficient illumination, the risk of accidents rises sharply — from heavy equipment missteps to slips and falls in poorly lit zones.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has emphasized the importance of proper lighting systems through Decree No. 1827 K/30/MEM/2018 on Good Mining Practice. While the regulation does not specify exact illumination levels, it refers to Indonesian National Standard (SNI) 16-7062-2004, which recommends different lighting intensities for various areas: 50–100 lux for haul roads, 100–200 lux for loading and dumping areas, and up to 500 lux for workshops and maintenance facilities.

A study by Sanders & Peay (1988) found that improved illumination can reduce mining accident rates by up to 60 percent. “Visibility is a safety factor that’s often underestimated,” said a mining supervisor in East Kalimantan.

To address this need, PT Sumberdaya Sewatama has introduced the Sewatama Lighting Tower, a modern lighting solution designed for mining operations. Equipped with energy-efficient LED lamps offering wide light coverage, the towers are built to withstand harsh weather and can be easily relocated to match shifting work zones.

By combining proper lighting standards with innovative solutions like the Sewatama Lighting Tower, Indonesia’s mining sector can enhance safety, efficiency, and operational sustainability. In the world of mining, light is not just about visibility — it’s about protecting lives and productivity.
