Working in the open sea (offshore), hundreds of kilometers from the mainland, demands more than just technical expertise. It requires a mandatory safety shield known as TBOSIET certification. But what exactly is it?
TBOSIET stands for Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training. This certification serves as definitive proof that offshore workers are equipped with the essential survival skills needed to operate in extreme marine environments.
In simple terms, TBOSIET is a foundational safety training specifically engineered for tropical water environments, such as those in Indonesia. While onshore operations follow general OSH (Occupational Safety and Health) standards, the safety requirements at sea are exponentially more rigorous. This certification is globally accredited by OPITO (Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organization), the gold standard for offshore energy safety.
Survival Beyond Instinct
Imagine being trapped inside a capsized helicopter underwater in pitch-black conditions. Without HUET (Helicopter Underwater Escape Training), a core component of TBOSIET, panic becomes your greatest enemy. This training builds muscle memory, allowing personnel to remain calm, release their seatbelts, and navigate through an exit while submerged.
Fundamentally, this training is designed to arm personnel with baseline knowledge regarding safety induction, evacuation procedures, firefighting, and sea survival techniques.
Core Components of TBOSIET:
1. Safety Induction: A comprehensive understanding of risks and fundamental regulations on offshore platforms.
2. HUET (Helicopter Underwater Escape Training): Critical self-rescue procedures in the event of a helicopter ditching at sea.
3. Sea Survival: Techniques for enduring the open ocean and the proper deployment of life rafts.
4. Firefighting and Self-Rescue: The use of portable fire extinguishers and strategic evacuation procedures during a fire emergency.
A Commitment to Continuous Competence
A TBOSIET certification is generally valid for four years. After this period, personnel must undergo a refresher course known as T-FOET (Tropical Further Offshore Emergency Training).
At Sewatama, we treat this not just as a regulatory requirement, but as a core value. We ensure our field personnel rigorously renew their certifications every four years, guaranteeing that our clients are served by experts who are not only technically proficient but also prepared for any emergency.
